Event Details

One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

The Unsupervised (VA)
improv / experimental

At the heart of The Unsupervised sits the incredible compositional voice of guitarist Jeff Younger. Melding the tropes of all kinds of bop, modal jazz and rock, this quintet offers incredibly complex, considered music in a highly excitable fashion. The reverberating guitar lines, pulsing drum work and charging horns will dig deep into your psyche and build a fortress. The inclusion of an upright bass in all the methods and madness, is an interesting choice; it often functions as the link between their more raucous, progressive moments and the groovier hints of traditional jazz at the core. Having recently been granted a 3 week residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts to work on new material for the group, commonly known as ‘The Great White Shark of Jazz’, Younger and company will be in top form as they make their way across the country this summer.

Personnel: Kristian Naso (trumpet), Colin Maskell (sax- ophones), Jeff Younger (guitar/composition), Russell Sholberg (upright bass) and Ben Brown (drums)

Crofts, Adams, Pearse (HFX)
improv / experimental

Comprised of three very (very!) active members of suddenlyLISTEN, a Halifax-based music community dedicated to new soundscapes. The trio explores music in the moment; all the frayed edges and deep wells of improvised chamber music. Because of this emphasis on spontaneity, their shows are always unique and revitalizing. These passionate players manipulate creaking cello, skulking bass and frantic, intermittent piano to create otherworldly atmospheres right before your very ears. With this most recent project, Crofts, Adams and Pearse have set their phasers to stun.

Personnel: Tim Crofts (piano), Norman Adams (cello) and Lukas Pearse (bass)
